A Seat at the Table – Favourite Cards from 2022!

Hello and welcome to a roundup for the year 2022! The following are my favourite cards from this year.

Some cards are actually categories or cycles of cards. I won’t talk about them too long, nor will I rank them. It’s important to note that I am a primarily black player who loves the graveyard.

That said, here goes!

  1. Body Launderer

I know I said I wouldn’t rank them, but Body Launderer is my favourite card from this year. Your nontoken creatures going to the graveyard lets you connive and you can get non-Rogues back to play when Body Launderer dies. I love this card, it’s been a combo engine and a role player. I genuinely cannot overstate my excitement when I see this in my hand.

  1. Black Market Connections

Phyrexian Arena got an upgrade! I don’t think I’ve ever paid less than three life for BMC. Draw a card and make a Treasure for three life? Give me that deal every time!

  1. Farewell

This is the best board wipe printed in a long time. It’s modal, it can hit everything except planeswalkers, and can take out graveyards. Versatile, final, incredible. Farewell is a new staple for Commander.

  1. Professional Face-Breaker

Grim Hireling is a great card and Professional Face-Breaker is a great red imitation, replacing the removal with card advantage. This makes you a ton of mana and when you’ve got enough of it, Treasures because impulse draw. Chef’s kiss, beautiful card.

  1. Tocasia’s Welcome

Welcoming Vampire loves little creatures, but Tocasia’s Welcome only cares what they cost to reward you with a card. Tendershoot Dryad with Welcoming Vampire loses the draw engine after a while, but Tocasia’s Welcome keeps the party going as long as your opponents allow.

  1. New Kamigawa Dragons

I’m a huge fan of Kamigawa dragons and giving them modal death triggers was a phenomenal idea. I think my favourite is Ao, the Dawn Sky, but an argument can be made for all of them. I will rank these ones.

Ao, Atsushi, Junji, Kairi, and Kura. Hey that’s alphabetical! Look how that worked out!

     7. Baldur’s Gate Ancient Dragons

Adding a little RNG to your top end can make otherwise sealed deal games still feel like there’s a chance for everybody, but no matter what, there’s power to even rolling a one. With the red dragon leading the pack for strongest, second place can go to any of them depending on the strategy. Fantastic cycle in a great set.

  1. Displacer Kitten

There isn’t much to say besides this card is busted good. Blinking any nonland permanent you control whenever you cast a noncreature is insane. Planeswalker decks, enchantment decks, artifact decks, take your pick, and add the kitten.

  1. The Ever-Changing ‘Dane

This is my favourite commander of 2022. One of the most satisfying decks to brew and pilot in a while for me. If you catch me at Three Kings Loot for Commander, there is an extremely good chance I’ll be running Dane.

  1. Witty Roastmaster

Impact Tremors on a creature that isn’t Purphoros, God of the Forge. Token swarm decks close out games with another similar effect. Devil decks have a new way to prod at opponents.

  1. Relic of Legends

Every creature-led Commander deck has a legendary creature to cast that becomes a mana dork with Relic of Legends. With Wizards printing so many really fun and good legendary creatures for the command zone and the 99, Relic will be a must have staple for lots of decks. Shout out to Honor-Worn Shaku.

  1. Mahadi, Emporium Master

What I wanted Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge to be. Mahadi does not care if the creatures that died were tokens, he’ll pay you for their death anyway. An absolute house in my Lyzolda, the Blood Witch deck and likely a card that will be overlooked for a while before getting its well deserved shine.

  1. Backgrounds

Backgrounds are a fantastic addition to the format for commander creatures to gain abilities. They don’t need to be in the command zone, but can be and they make for a cool non-partner brewing experience. I think we’ll see more of these and I’ll love them every time. Folk Hero, Haunted One, and Agent of the Iron Throne all stand out to me as ones to keep in mind.

  1. Luxior, Giada’s Gift / Resourceful Defense

Turn your planeswalkers into creatures so they can’t be attacked and now you can swing with them! Also, Resourceful Defense is one of the silliest cards for planeswalker decks in a long time. I run both of these in my Aminatou, the Fateshifter deck and it’s always nutty when either of these get to do their thing.

  1. Master of Ceremonies

This one hasn’t taken off yet, but it will. A common refrain in commander is that it’s gotten too fast, and while this card runs at a slower pace, it is non-threatening enough to not draw ire, but also powerful enough to give you a boost no matter what option. I’ve been dabbling with this card in my Thalisse, Reverent Medium decks and some upkeeps my opponents aren’t sure which option to pick because no matter what, I come out on top.

  1. Ratadrabik of Urborg

Legends matter card Ratadrabik of Urborg gave us a fun name to announce when he hits the battlefield, a strange lord ability for Zombies, and of course, a way for your legendary creatures to stick around a little longer in some way. Very powerful, will definitely be around lots.

  1. Tivit, Seller of Secrets

Very strong top end for competitive control decks. Ever-Changing Dane and Aminatou both love having Tivit in the 99. It’s always at least two Treasures and the rest is gravy. Plus with Ward 3, who really loses when he gets removed?

  1. Rampant Rejuvenator

There haven’t been a ton of green cards on this list, but Rampant Rejuvenator is one that has impressed me. Hydra, anthems or +1/+1 counters decks all need a Rejuvenator. If this were an Elemental, it’d be a slam dunk for all those Omnath Landfall decks running around. Rejuvenator dies and gets you two basics untapped at its base. Hit it with a Berserk – Foil or with a power doubling spell or even run it in an Abzan deck with Teysa Karlov, you’ll pull ahead by a lot.

  1. Currency Converter

There are a lot of looting effects out there. There’s Cycling, Connive, Faithless Looting and Faithful Mending cards out there. Add Currency Converter to the mix and you get a little extra value for having to ditch a land. Get a blocker out of nowhere if you need one. Worst case, you get an activated loot for two on this already. Exiling the discarded card is also optional! Excellent card and it’s only one mana.

  1. Aerial Extortionist

One of my favourite soft removal spells in a while. It doesn’t remove cards outright unless they’re tokens, it triggers on ETB and combat damage to a player, and not to mention if opponents decide they really need to recast that Sol Ring you took away, you draw a card. That’s not even taking into account that casting a commander will net you a card draw with this out. Prosper, Tome-Bound decks will just fill your hand with everything you need to win the game. Everybody should play this more!

Honorable Mention – Great Unclean One

I wish this was legendary. I’d build a monoblack deck with this at the helm like yesterday. A big fat 4/5 Demon that puts a clock on the table and says tick tock here come more little Demons. Very fun card!

That’ll do it for me this year! Until next year! Let me know what catches your eye and what you want me to cover.

Happy holidays and happy new year!

Upgrading the Table – Chaos Incarnate!

Hello! Welcome to a new version of my series A Seat at the Table I’ve decided to not-so cleverly call Upgrading the Table, where we take a preconstructed Commander deck and talk about inclusions and exclusions I would make.

Chaos Incarnate is helmed by Kardur, Doomscourge, who loves the combat step. When he enters, your opponents’ creatures are goaded and each attacking creature that dies while Kardur is in play drains your opponents for one life. Each opponent gets dinged for one and you gain a life. Not a bad deal.

This deck seems a little all over the place, but one thing is clear: it wants to ping your opponents down. There are spellslinger staples in here, but I don’t think this is the right way to go.

Here are five cards to include and five to take out of the deck.

Cards to Add

  1. Garna, Bloodfist of Keld

Something I don’t like about this deck is that there is a bunch of ways to remove creatures, but not many at instant speed which got me thinking: maybe we need to pivot. Enter one of my favourite cards from Dominaria United, Garna, Bloodfist of Keld.

She puts the onus on you to attack en masse or to have ways to kill your creatures on your turn so that you may get either a card, or ping each of your opponents. I think this is a solid game plan. Creating a ton of tokens is a great way to build Kardur and then you can take advantage of Garna without relying on your opponents to have creatures.

BONUS PICK: Something like Burn Down the House can be a board wipe when you need it, or create little Devils that can swing and make a ton of damage fly everywhere.

  1. Hanweir Garrison / Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder / Sling-Gang Lieutenant

Okay, so I’m having a hard time keeping to five cards to add. I also had a hard time with how split this deck is. Let’s lean in the way that allows you to be aggressive and in control at the same time.

Be aggressive with some token makers. Hanweir Garrison on attack gives you two more creatures that are also attacking, so if they die during combat, they will hit every opponent for one. If the tokens stick around, you can swing with them again next time, and hell, you might even get some extra value (hint: next section and also Garna).

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder gives you Thrulls equal to a creature you cast’s mana value. Play a six mana creature, get six Thrulls. Endrek goes away if you have seven or more, but there’s a fun balancing act to be had (hint: next section).

Sling-Gang Lieutenant comes in with two Goblins and a way to sacrifice them baked in. Do it during combat! Did the Goblins make it to combat damage but you still want to sacrifice them? Do it at the end of combat while you’re still in combat and Kardur still counts that! Also, this is on an enters the battlefield trigger (hint: section five).

  1. Goblin Bombardment + Altars

Come on. We’re playing black! Sacrifice your creatures to Ashnod’s Altar and Phyrexian Altar for mana! Sacrifice them to Altar of Dementia for mill! Sacrifice them to Viscera Seer or Woe Strider to scry!

Or, in keeping with the theme of the deck, sacrifice your creatures to ping for one. The most important part to all of these is that they are free sacrifice outlets and they can be done at instant-speed. Huge advantage.

  1. Disrupt Decorum

I am absolutely shocked this isn’t in the deck already. Disrupt Decorum is Kardur’s enter the battlefield ability, essentially, but it is also a sorcery. It can surprise opponents who stop you from triggering Kardur’s ETB by killing him over and over or using Darksteel Mutation. Four mana to mass goad was fantastic when it came out and it’s still fantastic.

  1. Conjurer’s Closet

It’s not the best card for the deck, but at the very least, you can target Kardur, which makes this a repeatable makeshift Disrupt Decorum. There are some solid ETBs in the 99: Solemn Simulacrum comes down on four, getting you to five mana and you can follow up with the Closet to go fetch another land, Wildfire Devils nabs spells in the yard, Combustible Gearhulk will likely regularly be a draw three when it hits. With all of those creatures your opponents’ control dying, Sepulchral Primordial is going to be a mighty juicy target for Conjurer’s Closet and will likely get you to close out the game.

Bonus: Forbidden Orchard

It taps for any colour and gives an opponent a token. It can be done at instant speed (or faster even) and can be used for political favour or to give someone something to goad and die in combat.

Cards to Remove

  1. Thermo-Alchemist / Guttersnipe

The spellslinger subtheme to this precon misses me completely. Firebrand Archer would have been a good inclusion too to proc off of artifacts, but generally, I’m not into spell slinging with this deck in its iteration.

  1. Ambition’s Cost

In precons, when upgrading, this immediately gets the cut for something like Night’s Whisper or more thematic draw. It’s four mana for three draws and lose three life. Is that bad? Not reeeeally, but is it good? Nah.

  1. Breath of Malfegor

Unless this deck went the damage doubling and spell doubling route with like Double Vision and Fiery Emancipation (tripling even), I don’t think this has a great slot in the deck. Yes, five mana for 15 damage is pretty cool, but it’s not how this deck does things.

  1. Ob Nixilis Reignited

With Kardur, you want creatures dying in combat so the minus two is fine, just not ideal. The ultimate never happens, and the card draw is expensive at five mana when you’re encouraging and aggressive game. I would avoid planeswalkers in this altogether.

  1. Reign of the Pit

The nontoken creatures you have are not really ones you’d want to sacrifice, so it’s more than likely you’ll pay six mana and consider sacrificing a token or Indulgent Tormentor and your opponents might have key creatures to sack, but if they have a 1/1 token or a Dockside Extortionist they’re done with, all you’ve really got is a big flying token that gets removed easily. In the right games, this can be a big swing, but with the remove going around, you’ll have spent six mana for an 8/8 flyer who goes to attacks and gets Terminated. No, thanks.

That does it for another Upgrading the Table! If there’s a precon or commander you’d like covered here or at A Seat at the Table, message me @mikecarrozza on Twitter and Instagram!

A Seat at the Table – Phyrexia: All Will Be One First Looks!

Phyrexia: All Will Be One is coming out in February with a prerelease in January, and I, for one, am absolutely thrilled.

They spoiled a few new cards, and a stellar reprint in Phyrexian Obliterator. I want to talk about the new cards and where they will see play. Let’s talk about them in order of which I am least to most excited for. If I’m not excited for it, it doesn’t mean it’s not good. In fact, I’ll be saying nice things about stuff I don’t quite care for. Let’s get started!

  1. Jor Kadeen, First Goldwarden

Look, another Boros commander that loves equipment and wants to attack – sign me up for the clairvoyant society because I could have predicted this without even trying.

Jor Kadeen’s first card – Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer – was a beefy 5/4 with First Strike and gave your entire board, including himself, +3/+0 if you had three or more artifacts. Again, cares about artifacts and wants to attack.

New Jor Kadeen is a two mana commander, which has merit. Slap any kind of equipment on him that boosts him by at least +1/+0 and you’ve got a 4 power trampling commander that just drew you a card. Not to mention if you have other equipped creatures, you’ll be buffing up Jor easily. Skullclamp or Bloodforged Battle-Axe make for a solid curve in a JKFG helmed deck. Find yourself some cheap Equipment, toss in a Sram, Senior Edificer and a Puresteel Paladin and get those Digsite Engineers and Myrsmith pumping out tokens to attach to.

Not a bad commander, just a little predictable as far as these colours go. Not really my favourite strategy to begin with, but it’s also pretty well-tread waters. He’s cool though!

  1. Koth, Fire of Resistance

The design here is extremely cool. Liliana of the Dark Realms is a better card, but Koth is basically modelled after it.

Plus ability – Fetch a land with relevant basic land type to hand. Lili can fetch any swamp and Koth gets basic mountain.

Minus ability – Removal based on relevant basic land type. Lili can also pump based on swamps.

Ultimate ability – An Emblem reminiscent of an iconic utility land that’s centred heavily in the basic land type. Lili’s emblem is Lake of the Dead and Koth’s is Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.  They’re not exactly like these lands, but they’re close.

You can’t evaluate a planeswalker off of its ultimate ability in Commander, but it’s so tempting because red can chump block for days and after two upticks of his plus ability, not only are you drawing two lands, you’re also set to ultimate the next turn! Then every mountain hitting play is damage flying around. Omnath, Locus of Rage is the perfect slot for Koth. I would say toss him in a mono-red deck and see how it goes! In the end though, there’s no Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for mountains yet, but when that comes, this card is going to soar.

  1. Blue Sun’s Twilight

I’m very excited for this new cycle riffing on the Sun’s Zenith cycle. X spells like this have lots of utility but find their homes in Zaxara, the Exemplary and Magus Lucea Kane where Unbound Flourishing makes them super charged.

Blue Sun’s Twilight at best will be seven+ mana for your opponent’s best creature and a copy of it. If this is in Lucea Kane, bam, that’s two of them. Anointed Procession and Parallel Lives make this even nuttier.

I have an Azorius clones deck that will love this as a tool to grab something to copy with Sakashima of a Thousand Faces or even to target my own creature, make a token copy, then Orvar, the All-Form makes another copy. Get this in a deck with Vedalken Orrery and mess with combat. I run Teferi, Time Raveler in my Aminatou, the Fateshifter deck. With Teferi’s plus one, I can cast Blue Sun’s Twilight on the creature attacking my planeswalkers, gain control of them and then on my turn, blink it with Thassa, Deep-Dwelling or Conjurer’s Closet to get that ETB. The Ever-Changing ‘Dane loves taking control of a creature and dumping them into the bin.

  1. Slobad, Iron Goblin

I think Slobad, Iron Goblin wearing what looks like Bosh, Iron Golem as armor (see the parallel’s in name?) is super freaking cool. I’m a fan of Illuminor Szeras and Soldevi Adnate. Slobad follows their lead but for just artifacts to funnel into more artifact spells or activate artifact abilities.

Ichor Wellspring is basically two cards for free with a Slobad activation. Use your Gilded Lotus  for three mana, sacrifice it for five mana, tap a land and that’s Portal to Phyrexia coming down turn six with mana to spare I’m sure. Meteor Golem comes in, does its job and then refunds you for seven mana. Let’s not forget activated abilities. Can’t use the mana? Gemstone Array can store it for you.

Liquimetal Torque a creature into an artifact and sacrifice it for more value. Atsushi, the Blazing Sky is a prime target for Liquimetal Coating/Liquimetal Torque.

Daretti, Scrap Savant, Goblin Engineer, and Goblin Welder can all do work in this deck. Reckless Fireweaver and Ingenious Artillerist say “let me in!”

  1. Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

The big bad of the Praetors herself, Elesh Norn is back!

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines is like an unrestricted Panharmonicon for all your permanents, and not just your creatures and artifacts. That isn’t even taking into account the Torpor Orb for your opponents for all permanents – not just creatures!

While that can be great because it shuts down opponents’ blink decks, enchantment/ Constellation decks, and Landfall decks, it also shuts down the negative ETB effects such as the bounce lands (Dimir Aqueduct, Izzet Boilerworks, etc – they enter and don’t force your opponents to bounce a land).

They also double the negative triggers for you. That said, hot damn this is an amazing value and stax piece. My Azorius clones deck, Aminatou superfriends blink, Estrid, the Masked, and Omnath, Locus of Creation (a work in progress!) decks all really love ParnharMOMicon.

As a commander, Elesh Norn feels like just a fine stax commander, but I reckon she’s going to be in the 99 of many, many decks. We just got Preston, the Vanisher and getting two Illusion copies of a nontoken creature, like Sun Titan, Cavalier of Dawn, or Aerial Extortionist, means big trouble for your opponents. This is going to be a card to see in play and watch it do its thing.

That does it for this preview! Phyrexia: All Will Be One comes out on February 10th, 2023!

Please let me know if you want me to cover a commander in particular for A Seat at the Table on Twitter or Instagram @mikecarrozza.
